Become a Petaluma Animal Shelter V.I.P.P.
(Very Important Pet Person)!

Catpeople, dogpeople and all-around pet people will find a worthwhile pastime as a volunteer at the Petaluma Animal Shelter.

You can choose to do things with the animals or for the animals but either way, the following points apply...

  1. When you volunteer, we ask that you commit to a minimum of 4 hours a month for a six month period. Volunteers are asked to keep to a set schedule.
  2. Attendance at a Volunteer Orientation is required before volunteering. Orientations are usually held on the first Saturday of each month at 3pm at the shelter.
  3. Our minimum age for children to volunteer without a parent or guardian is 14. Children 10 through 13 are welcome when accompanied by an adult parent or guardian who serves as the primary volunteer.

Ways to help...

  • Canine Coach!
You provide individual attention, affection, grooming and basic training to our adoption dogs. We'll show you how.
  • Feline Friends!
You provide attention and grooming and also tidy up our cats' living spaces. Our rabbits also need attention!
  • Office Helper!
We are always busy at the front desk. you'll answer phones and assist the public.
  • Adoption Counselor!
This job requires at least six months experience as a shelter volunteer and attendance at special educational presentations. You'll help match people with pets.
  • Foster Parents!
This job takes place in your own home. Most often we need foster parents willing to devote the time, attention and affection to kittens who are too young to be adopted. We also need foster parents for mom cats and their babies and occasionally have a need for foster homes for cats and dogs recovering from surgery or illness. We supply the training and all food and supplies.

What you can do for the animals...

  1. Hold a car wash, garage sale, lemonade stand, bake sale, raffle, or penny drive at your work or school to benefit the shelter.
  2. Call the shelter to help with one-time special projects and events. (Decorate recycle bins, landscape the shelter grounds, make shelter signs, etc...).
  3. Check out our on-line WISH LIST for much needed shelter supplies
  4. Attend Shelter events (See Events page)
  5. Participate in Shelter advocacy groups such as PETaluma Pet Pals (monthly meeting is last Tuesday of each month, 7:00 p.m.)
